Meet BZNC: Vicki Piaskowski

How did you get involved with BZNC?

Sharon Matola, the late founding director of the Belize Zoo and TEC, asked if I would be interested in joining the BZNC Board. I was thrilled. I provided my CV to the Board and they approved my becoming a Board member.

What BZNC initiative is the most meaningful to you?

The conservation education programs at the Belize Zoo. Many school children visit the Zoo every year to learn about Belize’s wildlife. If they can’t get to the Zoo, the Zoo educators go to classrooms. This gives all Belizean school children the opportunity to learn about the animals native to their country and the importance of wildlife conservation.

What do you wish more people knew about wildlife or Belize?

Belizeans are warm and friendly and are proud of their beautiful country. While I served as the international coordinator of the Birds Without Borders-Aves Sin Fronteras project of the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation from 1997- 2007, I had the opportunity to work with our dedicated all-Belizean staff on research, conservation, and education projects. I met many people who care deeply about conservation and wildlife.
