The BZNC team holds deep gratitude for the extraordinary individuals who dedicate their time, wisdom, and hearts to protecting wildlife in Belize and beyond. We’re reflecting on the life, legacy, and enduring impact of long-time Board Member, Heidi Kollias.
Heidi brought a rare combination of generosity, strength, and positive energy to everything she touched. She loved nature in all its vibrant colors, from walking hours alongside the coastal waters to observing the creepy crawlies, a passion from her undergraduate days. She believed that education was the backbone of change and she advocated for everyone to have access to educational and collaborative opportunities.
How did Heidi get involved with BZNC?
Heidi and her family became a cherished part of The Belize Zoo’s extended community in 2012. Driven by a deep love for animals, nature, and community, she stepped into a leadership role on our Board of Directors, bringing her natural warmth, thoughtfulness for the wellbeing of others, and dedication to our core mission.
What was Heidi's impact on wildlife conservation?
Throughout her years with BZNC, Heidi was a steadfast advocate for animal welfare, veterinary care, and habitat protection. Heidi had a rare gift for cutting through complex problems with clarity and heart — a gift that shaped BZNC board discussions and inspired the grant partners and many others who believed in our work.
One of her most significant and lasting milestones was her critical role in the creation of The Belize Zoo’s Veterinary Clinic. Alongside her husband, George, and their daughter, Allie, and their son, Van, Heidi contributed significantly to making the clinic a reality, providing rescued, orphaned, and native wildlife with world-class, dedicated care on site.
Her commitment ensured that the Belize Zoo could deliver high-standard medical treatment to wildlife in need, and strengthened the zoo’s capacity to rescue, rehabilitate, and protect Belize’s iconic species for years to come.
A Favorite BZNC Memory of Heidi
A personal reflection from Dr. Sandy True, BZNC Treasurer:
“Any trip to the Belize Zoo that was coordinated by Heidi always included her most important supplies — notebooks, coffee, chocolate, and cookies, just to name a few. Her kind gestures towards the staff were shown in so many ways and made her a much loved member of the Belize Zoo Family."
Honoring Her Legacy
Heidi’s devotion to wildlife advocacy remains an inspiring reminder of what it means to be a true guardian of nature. We are profoundly grateful for the time, heart, and care she poured into BZNC.
