Meet BZNC: Dr. Sandy True
How did you get involved with BZNC?
I visited the Belize Zoo for the first time in 2015. I was enchanted by the "front" of the zoo with all the wonderful signage and natural habitats, however, the "back" of the zoo really struck me. The working area for the staff to treat the animals had a tin roof and no walls, and a door was used for the operating table.
My medical background kicked in and I couldn't imagine the animals or the staff having to live in these conditions, so we formed BZNC and built a new clinic. The clinic now has an operating room, a recovery area, a pharmacy storage, staff lounge, office spaces, and kitchen with coolers for all the food for the animals.
What BZNC initiative is the most meaningful to you?
Many of our fundraising projects make the natural habitats for the animals safe and secure. We want Zoo visitors to learn about the animals and respect their environment. The shared mission of the Zoo and BZNC is to promote the ability for people and animals to live together in harmony.
What do you wish more people knew about wildlife or Belize?
The Belizean people are extraordinary. Their compassion for the animals and their knowledge of their country's history are amazing. After visiting Belize, you leave knowing that the Belizean people are so proud of their country and work tirelessly to educate people on the importance of conservation and sharing their land with all.
