Meet BZNC: Adam G Denish, VMD
How did you get involved with BZNC?
While I was the veterinarian for the Elmwood Park Zoo in Pennsylvania, our director told me the story of his friend, Sharon Matola, the founder of the Belize Zoo. Our zoo had some of the same animals, such as jaguars, coatimundis, howler monkeys and cougars, so I had a significant interest in meeting Sharon and visiting the Belize Zoo.
On a cruise in 2012, I detoured and met Sharon and fell in love with the people and animals of Belize. She introduced me to the founders of BZNC and I found my passion.
Can you see the jaguar in the middle?
What BZNC initiative is the most meaningful to you?
BZNC’s largest fundraising project was to design and build the veterinary clinic and commissary for the Belize Zoo. It meant a lot to our team, the staff, the animals, and the community. Now, veterinary teams (including myself!) come from all over the US come to Belize to help with animal care in a quality veterinary clinic. We always need more veterinary equipment, but at least we have a functional, permanent clinic to safely care for the animals.
What do you wish more people knew about wildlife or Belize?
The Belizean people always amaze me. The staff at the zoo works incredibly hard to make a difference in the lives of the animals and the environment, even though they often lack the resources and funds. They are selfless in their commitment.
